The night skies remind us of our place in the Universe. The universe gives us a way point, makes us feel a connection and understanding of our own scale. It gives us perspective. Being under a sky full of stars makes you feel tiny, humble, kind and caring.
The Scalessness of a desert landscape is reflecting the vastness of the universe.
The lack of external stimulation brutally confronts you with the nothingness of the desert.
The mind is dried out, in biblical terms the desert symbolizes a process of purification.

The project is a refuge located in the Nevada desert. It’s a place that pulls you away from known reality, a place that in all aspects caters for you too reconnect with nature, in its purest and emptiest form. The space provides an escape, where visitors naturally “unplug” themselves from the constant noise. The main focus is quietness, slowness and contemplation.

The architecture situates itself as a mediator between the desert and sky, forming a space around the emptiness and vastness for people to regain a sense of belonging.

Polyrhythm as a notion in music, is especially in west Africa the backbone of the drum sound. Its a layered sound of independent rhythms. The sound has no beginning, middle or end, it forms a continuous space, that you as a passer-by step into and out off. The drum rhythms is used traditionally in rituals, where these become the mediums for individual too transcend and communicate between the dead and alive.
The polyrhythmic additionally describes the seemingly independent and continuously intersecting layers of diverse movements, realities, histories and futures expressed in the city.
Because of the lack of a formal social system, the individual is left with the responsibility for his own survival - which in my eyes becomes the most vibrant force in the city.

An autonomous space for uncertainty

The VO[I]X is a space that confronts the individual and questions the very foundation society is built upon, establishing a spatial landscape that becomes an incubator for discussion and further iteratively defines and (re)defines the perspective from which we approach the future.

Inspired by Bertolt Brecht, breakage of the fourth wall, which serves as an invisible “barrier” that glues a play and an audience together subconsciously, an illusional reality - the breakage pushes the audience out, creating an in-between space for conscious reflection on the play.

As part of society, an individual lacks the proper distance to be able to reflect on his surroundings.

The project aims to re-interpretate the ground of bury into an 3 dimensional cemetery structure, that sits as a piece of urban furniture, saturating the surrounding context, creating pockets of intimacy, as it weaves through the urban fabric, as a public inhabitable space.

The structure is inserted urbanistically in places of aqua alta, the dying points of Venice, the structure provides a space of passage, as the edge condition is expanded into public relief points.

The cemetery structure has a slightly morbid character, that death lies beneath the surface, gently touching and supporting the city, reminding us off the temporality and absence of… the finit nature of human life is thus challenged, as the inhabitation evokes the memory of the passed. Names and dates, provides familiarity and surreal perspective, as we curiously w(a)onder through generations of stories, slightly touching ordinary peoples lives.

Through the possibility of linking stories, novels, biographies too the deceased, the structure will accumulate multiple layers of information, providing a frame where history unfolds, through the eyes and words of former inhabitants, where scanning will create virtual windows into the past.

The Archipelago and arc represents autonomy - an autonomy that we see in the Monument,and as a form of preservation

The monument maintains a distance to its surroundings while being a very big part of the culture it exist in. The ambiguity in being the autonomous entity, that sits without touching but is made entirely of its surroundings, although it never becomes its surroundings.

The monument seeks to confront its contextual surrounding both as an urban layer ( a reinterpretation of the square ) and as an architectonic in- tervention that preserves a distorted memory of Venice.

The Architecture of the Monument is derived from the contextual scan, where the Monument itself becomes a reflection of its input. Input being the ornament that stems from the scan of the environment, thereby enhancing and reinterpreting the ornament as a spatial configuration.

A house to say goodmorning too hug when you come home

architecture and residential construction sometimes feels a bit cold, we use the same windows, doors and bricks. We sit in the same boxes and probably think more or less the same thoughts and come to more or less the same conclusions and mostly disagree about the same things.

Knud Romer, a danish writer, once said that the problem with democracy is that if one says the cup is red, but the other nine say it is blue, it turns blue.

“A house you say good morning too and hug when you get home”. A home you want to talk to, a house that doesn’t look like all the others, just as you probably don’t look like all the others either, and maybe don’t think the same thoughts but maybe just need a home to talk to.

For each box there is an inhabitant.
The boxes move one step down every year.
One step closer.

The bottom is buried and forgotten.

You feel the movement
You hear rumbling from downstairs and upstairs
You don’t know what it is.
You don’t know what you are
There is no mirror.
Who are you without a mirror.
Do you exist?
Or do you only get to exist through the eyes of another?
Who would you think you would be?
Maybe there would be no who and no you. Just be?

Would you feel anger? Would you feel awkward?

Would you try to get out?
There is a latter
Would you want to take it?
Its around the corner
Would you dare to look around the corner?
If so, would you go up or down?

The boxes move down So maybe down?
Back to the ground
